Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Sign Language Interpreter to provide one-on-one interpreting services for a high school student who is deaf or hard of hearing. This position supports the student throughout the school day in both academic and extracurricular settings, ensuring full access to communication and participation.
Key Responsibilities:
· Provide real-time sign language interpretation between the student and teachers, peers, and staff.
· Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, school assemblies, and other school-related activities.
· Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards of interpreting.
· Collaborate with teachers, support staff, and educational teams to facilitate the student’s full participation in the school experience.
· Adjust interpreting techniques based on subject matter and student’s preferences and needs.
· Support the student in fostering independence and self-advocacy skills.
· Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as needed.
Qualifications:
· Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and familiarity with Deaf culture.
· Certification through RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) or equivalent preferred.
· Previous experience interpreting in educational settings is strongly preferred.
· Ability to adapt communication styles for different educational content and age levels.
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
· High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in interpreting, education, or a related field is a plus |
